Halifax hip hop video introduces The Donair Dance to the Chinese community.

The video is a humorous tip-of-the-hat to the Golden Age of Donair in Halifax.

Halifax, NS Dec. 6, - Halitube, a staple organization representing the young Chinese community in Nova Scotia, is excited to celebrate National Donair Day on Dec. 8 with the release of The Donair Dance music video celebrating Halifax’s best-known late-night street food.

The video, which premieres on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at the Oasis Pub in Halifax, shows a young Chinese woman entering a King of Donair (KOD) outlet in Halifax and experiencing the donair for the first time. The video is a collaboration between Halitube and KOD restaurant to introduce the donair to the Chinese community.

“Donairs were new to me,” said Will Yang, president of Halitube and producer of the video. “I’d never had one before. It had a huge impact on me and I couldn’t wait to introduce this to my community.”

The video, shot on location at the KOD outlet on Quinpool Rd, shows the Chinese woman being met by the “King of Donair” who does “The Donair Dance” and raps a song that explains the donair to the woman.

The song is written and performed by Corey Wright, a hip-hop artist based in Halifax. The dance routines were choreographed by Sicily Zhou.

“The nineties were the golden age of Halifax donairs and donair culture,” said Yang. “We shot the film using a nineties look and feel to capture that vibe of that time and introduce it to a whole new community.”

“First ya grill the pita, then you gotta grill the meat,” Wright raps into the camera. “You gotta flip it when it’s crisp and you lay it out nice.”

The video will be shown on Halitube the Halifax video channel aimed at Chinese viewers. It will also reach audiences on social media.
